Fantasy Name Builder makes names for characters in stories, tabletop games and video games. Pick a race or class, like an elf, a dwarf, a vampire or a bard, and it gives you four names at a time. Keep the ones you like and roll again for the rest.
My name is Joan Ramos. I put together small, free websites, each one built to do a single job well.
My first was Mary's Printables, a home for free printable pages. I figured it would stay a quiet little project. Then the emails began. A teacher had tracked down the one worksheet her class was waiting on. A parent was leaning on one of the charts while their child went through a tough time. Someone else needed a page printed in a rush and got it done.
The common thread was simple. What they came for was waiting for them, it worked the first time, and nobody asked them to sign up or hand anything over. I hold every site I make to that same standard.
Every writer and every game master knows the moment. The story is moving, a new character walks in, and they need a name right now. "Bob the Elf" breaks the spell for everyone at the table.
I wanted a place where you can grab a name that sounds like it belongs in that world in a few seconds, then get right back to the fun part.
The best fantasy names sound like they come from somewhere. Elves in one story might share soft, flowing sounds, while dwarves get short, heavy ones. When names from the same people share a pattern, the world feels real without anyone having to explain it.
A good name is also easy to say out loud. If your players can't pronounce it, they'll give the character a nickname within ten minutes. Short names work well for characters who show up often; save the long, grand ones for kings and ancient dragons.
If a name feels out of place, a race is missing something, or a button won't behave, email me at [email protected]. I'm the one who reads it.
Fantasy Name Builder belongs to a group of free tools and games I run at FriendlyApps.
